The Head of the Nerd God

Look What I Can Do!

As anyone who knows me (or who has really looked at this site) knows, I design games for people to play with each other:  board games, card games, role-playing games...  I like the idea of having something people can do together, face to face, and just enjoy some play-time, rather than zoning out in front of a television or spending so much time interacting with a computer or video game screen that they forget what people look like!  Just recently, I designed a new set of games, called Gamer's Dozen!  The idea was that instead of having a single board on which to play maybe one or two games, if we used tiles, we could make as many different game boards as we wanted!  The instruction set for Gamer's Dozen contains the twelve games I invented for it--I will add more, and I invite other people to send me their ideas for games on the set to playtest (click to e-mail suggestions, once you've had a chance to play with the set).  For each new game of yours that I include in the next edition, I'll write you a check for twenty dollars--or, if you prefer, two more sets of Gamer's Dozen!  Those of you here in Hamtramck can see the games and play with them beforehand at Cafe 1923, over on Holbrook!  They even have copies to buy, and you won't have to worry about the additional shipping costs!

Advice for Creative Folks

  • If you have a good idea, you must move on it as soon as possible before the Procrastination Demons can get to you, otherwise your idea will go nowhere.

  • Consider what sources you have open to you so that you can do your projects on your budget.  This is a creative process in itself.  Sometimes, this will mean that you have to settle for something that isn't an exact match, but when you're on a budget, you proceed with what you can get rather than what you might ultimately want.

  • If someone finds a weak-point within your project, that's just a challenge to do one of three things:

    • Patch the weak-point directly,

    • Change the project so that the weak-point disappears, or

    • Turn said weak-point into a strength for your project.

  • Once you get started, keep your eyes on the goal.  If you don't, you risk getting caught up in something else, and procrastination takes over.  It's a constant fight, but it's worth it.
